Prevention

How many times have you heard that? Now there are even more reasons to heed that advice. Taking good care of your teeth and gyms isn’t just about preventing cavities or bad breath. The mouth is a window into the health of the body. Systemic diseases-those that affect the entire body such as diabetes, AIDS and Sjogren’s syndrome-may first become apparent because of mouth lesions or other oral problems. The mouth is filled with countless bacteria, some linked to tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease. It is so important to see us regularly not only for your oral health but your overall health.

Diet & Nutrition
How is your diet? Do you eat a balanced diet? Are you getting the right amount of the four food groups to keep your body healthy? Do you drink lots of water? All these are huge factors for your oral and full body health. They all go hand and hand.
Brushing & Flossing
Regular brushing thoroughly twice a day is a great way to maintain your oral healthcare. Poor brushing and flossing techniques are sure to lead to tooth decay and bone loss. Flossing should be an important part of your daily routine. It helps remove bacteria between your teeth. Without it, may lead to gum disease and loss of bone density that holds your teeth in place.

Fluoride
We are seeing more patients with cavities now than we have in quite some time, since communities don’t fluorinate their water. Bottled water products that contain fluoride as well as, fluoride toothpaste and mouthwashes, have all helped to keep the onset of cavitites down.
Sealants
Dental sealants act as a barriers to prevent cavities. They are a plastic material usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often. Thorough brushing and flossing help remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth. But toothbrush bristles cannot reach all the way into the depressions and grooves to extract food and plaque. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by “sealing out” plaque and food. The likelihood of developing pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. But adults can benefit from sealants as well.

Sensitive Teeth
If a taste of ice cream or a sip of coffee is sometimes painful or if brushing and flossing makes you wince occasionally you may have a common problem called “sensitive teeth”. There can be many causes for sensitive teeth. Please call the office to see how we can help.
